Top deck and lower deck overhauls

Remanufacturing and overhauls are both options to increase the life of your locomotive.  Remanufacturing will increase performance and add 15 to 20 years to the life of your locomotive, overhauls add 7 to 9 years.  A remanufactured locomotive is disassembled to the frame and its components are distributed throughout the shop to be qualified and replaced as needed.  Mechanical, electrical and rotating equipment parts are remanufactured using today’s finest technology.  The main frame, cab, long hood and truck frames are sandblasted, checked for wear, repaired and completely painted.  Remanufacturing costs are about 60% of a new locomotive.

Overhauls are another option that offer significant savings.  The exterior is cleaned and all mechanical and electrical problems are corrected as per the customer specifications.  Each locomotive has a unique work scope to make sure the locomotive is getting the proper attention needed to become a serviceable locomotive for you in the future.

Upon completion, our quality control inspector checks the locomotive’s on board performance and carefully notes the results.  Final adjustments are made and your locomotive is ready.

Wreck Repairs

NREC’s metal fabrication department has broad capabilities in forming, shaping and fabricating all alloys and gauges of metal on locomotives.  Wrecked and damaged locomotives look like new with the help of our special applications equipment and the expertise of our certified welders.  Mis-aligned or damaged frames are straightened and rebuilt to your specifications using OEM procedures.  The computer controlled punch press precisely cuts metal for specific projects like complete cabs, long hoods and high voltage cabinets.  A shape cutting torch machine can cut heavy metal any size for frames, coupler pockets and fuel tanks.

Let us help you get that damaged or wrecked locomotive back on track for you.

Engine Remanufacturing

NREC has all the rebuilt engine components you need to keep your locomotives in revenue service. From water & lube oil pumps, governors & detectors, to complete overhaul kits.

Governors
Upon their arrival at NREC, governors are disassembled and all parts are cleaned and qualified before being reassembled to OEM Specifications. They are then put through rigorous testing to ensure a quality product.

Engine Detectors
Engine detectors are completely disassembled and cleaned. They are reassembled to OEM Specifications and thoroughly tested.

Oil and Water Pumps
NREC disassembles and cleans oil and water pumps before inspecting them for cracks or other defects. New bearings and seals are applied and then the pump is reassembled to OEM Specifications.

92 day, annual and tri-annual inspections

National Railway Equipment Co. can also complete the FRA requirements for the periodical inspections for your locomotives. The locomotives can be sent to one of the NREC shops or our field service team can perform the inspections onsite. We can perform the inspection to your requirements or choose the NREC inspection which can include:
